COURSE CURRICULUM

The civil engineering course starts with a common first year, designed to provide a broad foundation across related disciplines such as Civil Engineering BSc, Civil Engineering MEng/BEng, and Civil and Environmental Engineering BEng. This first year gives you the chance to work alongside students in similar programs, broadening your exposure to various subject areas and professions. It encourages collaboration, allowing you to share insights and develop a deeper understanding. If you find a particular subject area interests you, you can switch degrees after completing your first year, subject to progression requirements. The modules in the first year include Geotechnics and Construction Materials, Surveying and Transportation Engineering, Construction Project, Structural Analysis and Mathematics, Structural Engineering Design Project, and Sustainable Environments. These modules provide a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in areas like soil mechanics, surveying, project planning, structural mechanics, and sustainability, all of which form a solid foundation for more specialized learning in later years. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced topics such as hydraulics, structural design, soil mechanics, and project management. You’ll have the opportunity to apply your learning to real-world projects, considering sustainability and other global issues. In the final year, students engage in an Interdisciplinary Project, Research Dissertation, and Engineering Analysis. The interdisciplinary project promotes teamwork and professional development through real-world, collaborative scenarios, while the dissertation allows for deep exploration of a specific engineering problem. The Engineering Analysis module deepens your understanding of structural performance, materials technology, and infrastructure sustainability, preparing you for professional practice in the civil engineering field.
