COURSE CURRICULUM

In your first year, shared with other building and engineering disciplines, you will be introduced to the essential topics that form the foundation of construction-related professions. This includes an understanding of what constitutes good building design, the materials and methods used in the construction process, and the factors that can contribute to the deterioration or failure of structures. The year consists of six compulsory modules. In materials and building surveying, you will explore the key engineering properties of both modern and traditional construction materials such as concrete, steel, glass, timber, and masonry. The focus will be on understanding their composition, durability, and potential risks during and after construction. The construction technology and environmental sciences module will give you insight into the structure and performance of low-rise buildings, while also connecting your learning to global sustainability through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Spatial design and visual communication introduces the design process as a collaborative, circular activity, where you will learn to communicate ideas and solutions effectively within a design team to achieve creative and sustainable outcomes. In structural analysis and mathematics, you will develop core mathematical skills while applying structural mechanics principles to analyse and solve civil engineering problems. The structural engineering design project module allows you to apply the theories and practices from previous modules in a real-world context by engaging in a civil engineering project, demonstrating the connection between academic learning and professional application. Finally, sustainable environments encourages you to examine the broader societal and environmental impacts of construction through a practical, student-led project tied to the UN’s sustainability goals. Together, these modules equip you with both the technical and collaborative skills required to progress in the civil engineering field, while grounding your understanding in sustainability and real-world practice.
