COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the sociology and criminology program, students are introduced to foundational concepts and critical thinking skills across a range of social themes. The curriculum is designed to offer a broad grounding through modules such as “Understanding Society,” which explores key sociological theories and methods, and “Crime, Disorder and Social Control,” which delves into criminological theories and the social construction of crime. Students also develop essential academic and digital skills in “Keys to Study in Sociology and Criminology,” while “Diversity and Divisions” unpacks long-standing and emerging social identities and inequalities. “Media and Popular Culture” enables students to critically engage with media's role in shaping perceptions, and “Social Policy and Social Change” explores the impact of governmental policies on societal well-being. In the second year, students build upon this foundation with deeper explorations into social theory and contemporary issues. “Traditions and Controversies in Social Theory” introduces postcolonial, critical race, and queer theories, while “Researching Social Life” prepares students for their final year project. Modules such as “21st Century Lifestyles,” “Body/Self,” and “Families and Relationships” investigate the nuances of identity, the self, and evolving social roles. “Political Activism #TheAgeOfEmpowerment” highlights the dynamics of social movements and their cultural significance. In the final year, students consolidate their learning and pursue a major independent project. The “Final Project” module offers flexibility to explore a topic of personal interest through academic writing or creative media. Meanwhile, “The Lunar Society: Philosophy of the Midlands” reflects on the region’s Enlightenment legacy, encouraging students to consider how history, philosophy and place intersect. With a balance of theoretical inquiry and practical research, the program equips students with critical, analytical, and communicative skills applicable to diverse career paths or further academic study.
