COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology and Criminology program offers a broad foundation in the first year, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of key concepts and issues in both disciplines. Modules include "Understanding Society," which introduces students to critical sociological theories and methods, and "Crime, Disorder and Social Control," which delves into criminological theories related to crime and societal responses. The year also covers topics such as "Diversity and Divisions," addressing social inequalities related to class, gender, and race, as well as "Social Policy and Social Change," which examines the role of social policies in shaping society. By the second year, students engage with more specialized topics like "Traditions and Controversies in Social Theory," which explores classical and contemporary theories, and "Contemporary and Critical Issues in Crime and Justice," addressing current criminological debates. "Policing and Criminal Justice" focuses on the criminal justice system, while "Political Activism" analyzes social movements and their influence. In the final year, students consolidate their knowledge and prepare for professional work. They choose from optional modules such as "Crime, Victimisation and Harm," focusing on the evolving field of criminology, and "Punishment and Penology," which critiques modern penal systems. The "Final Project" allows students to undertake an in-depth investigation into a topic of interest, with support from a mentor. This program equips students with the theoretical and practical skills needed to analyze social issues, engage with criminological research, and address contemporary challenges in both sociology and criminology.
