COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Work program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in the discipline, preparing them for effective practice in diverse settings. In the first year, students focus on the foundational knowledge required for social work, including human growth and development, communication skills, legal and policy frameworks, and theories and methods of practice. The core modules in the first year, such as Introduction to Social Work, Communication in Social Work, and Legal and Policy Frameworks for Practice, aim to introduce students to the key concepts and challenges in the field. Students are also introduced to theories of human development, which help them understand the complex needs of individuals across the lifespan. Theories and Methods in Social Work Practice provide a framework for applying person-centered, anti-oppressive, and strengths-based approaches, while the Readiness for Practice module prepares students for their first placement by ensuring they meet the necessary professionalcapabilities.Inn the second year, students apply their knowledge through a 70-day placement, where they are expected to demonstrate their ability to work in real-life social work settings. Modules such as Critical Reflective Practice 1 and Social Work Practice 1 help students critically reflect on their practice and deepen their understanding of the role of the social worker. They also explore sociological perspectives and social work with children, young people, families, and adults. Students develop their understanding of legislation and policies relevant to children’s safeguarding and adult well-being, along with the impact of poverty, inequality, and diversity.The final year consolidates students' learning and prepares them for employment as Newly Qualified Social Workers. Through a 100-day placement and advanced modules such as Critical Reflective Practice 2, Social Work Practice 2, and Research-mindedness in Social Work, students apply their learning to complex practice situations, enhancing their professional development and leadership skills. The Organisational Context of Social Work module prepares students for working in multi-agency and inter-professional settings, while Research-mindedness equips them with the skills to engage in evidence-informed practice.
