COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Public Health and Community Studies degree prepares students for careers in sectors that promote health and address wider social determinants such as housing, transport, and education. In the first year, students are introduced to key principles of public health through modules like Communication Skills and Inclusive Practice, Community and Change, Contemporary Public Health, and Lifespan Development and Identity. These modules focus on understanding community dynamics, effective communication, and the foundations of health promotion while providing the academic tools needed for further study. Completion of this year leads to an HNC. In the second year, students develop analytical skills and deepen their understanding of societal structures and health-related behaviours. Modules include Social Divisions and Social Groups, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Lifestyle Trends and Behaviour Change, and Social Science Research Methods. These explore sociological theories, mental health service provision, and how lifestyle impacts public health. Students also begin designing their own small-scale research projects, gaining practical experience in evaluating and planning research. Successful completion results in an HND. The final year expands on leadership, management, and community health strategies. Students take modules like Leadership and Management in Public Health, Promoting Healthy Communities, Contemporary Welfare and Social Policy, and a Research Project. These modules examine global public health challenges, social policy in the UK, and the critical skills needed for effective leadership and innovation in community health settings. The final research project enables students to investigate a social issue or policy in-depth using secondary data. By the end of the program, graduates will be equipped with the professional, academic, and leadership skills needed to work across public, private, and voluntary sectors or pursue further education. The course blends theoretical knowledge with real-world application, focusing on reducing health inequalities and promoting healthier communities.
