COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Primary Education and Teaching Studies course offers a comprehensive pathway into the education sector, focusing on teaching children aged 0-8. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of primary education, including child development, the history of education, effective teaching practices, and children’s literature. Modules support students in understanding how past and present educational methods impact current practices. This year also includes an 80-hour placement in a local educational setting, providing hands-on experience and helping students start to form their professional identity. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a Higher National Certificate (HNC). The second year builds on this foundation by exploring theoretical perspectives of learning, sociological influences on education, and the teaching of core subjects such as English, maths and science. A module on research methods introduces students to academic research within education, preparing them for the independent work required in their final year. Another 80-hour placement supports the development of professional skills through observation and participation in classroom environments. Completion of this year leads to a Higher National Diploma (HND). The final year prepares students for leadership roles or further study, focusing on inclusive education, curriculum design, and cross-curricular teaching strategies. Students also undertake a major independent research project on a topic of their choice, demonstrating their understanding of both theory and practice. Topics such as disability inclusion, curriculum creation, and engagement through science and the arts allow students to refine their expertise and teaching philosophy. By the end of the course, graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills and experience needed to enter teaching or pursue further qualifications such as a PGCE. The course is designed to develop confident, reflective and well-rounded educators ready to meet the diverse needs of children in primary education.
