COURSE CURRICULUM

The Primary Education and Teaching Studies course is designed to prepare students for a rewarding career in primary education by combining theory, practice and reflection. In year one, students build foundational knowledge through modules on child development, the history of education, and primary teaching techniques. This includes an introduction to lesson planning, behaviour management and children's literature. A school placement allows students to gain early hands-on experience and observe teaching standards in practice.In year two, students deepen their understanding of child development by exploring key educational theories and sociological perspectives. They also examine how social factors and educational policies affect learning. Core subjects like English, maths and science are studied in greater depth to enhance pedagogical confidence. A research methods module provides essential skills for conducting independent studies, while another school placement continues to develop professional identity and classroom experience.The final year focuses on advanced topics such as inclusive education, curriculum design and cross-curricular teaching. Students learn how to adapt lessons for children with additional needs and explore how to create engaging and broad curricula. Science and creative subjects like art and music are used to support whole-child development. The course concludes with a research project, allowing students to explore an educational topic of interest, demonstrating critical thinking and analytical skills.Each year includes school placements to support real-world learning. Graduates leave with the theoretical and practical skills needed to work in primary schools or progress to further training such as a PGCE. The course structure supports those balancing study with other commitments, offering a timetable that allows for a consistent routine. This blend of academic learning, practical experience and flexibility ensures students are well-prepared for the demands of modern teaching.
