COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, the curriculum provides a foundational understanding of the key concepts in History, Politics, and International Relations. Students start with the module "Ideas and Concepts that Shape the World," which introduces major themes guiding their studies. "Nations and Nationalism: From Unification to Annihilation" focuses on the evolution of nationalism and the impact of the nation-state, tracing its origins from the Atlantic Revolutions to modern events like Brexit. "The Making of a Globalised World" examines how globalisation has transformed cultural, social, and economic realities through the exchange of ideas, peoples, and goods. "After Destruction: The World since 1945" explores the major developments in world politics post-World War II, including topics like the Cold War, the rise of China, and populist movements. "Power, People and the State" delves into political systems and institutions after WWII, assessing the gap between political theory and practice. "Freedom, Rights, and Democracy" introduces key concepts that underpin contemporary political debates, focusing on modern political systems and structures.In Year 2, the focus shifts to more advanced topics such as global security, foreign policy, and British politics. "Emerging Powers and Global Order" looks at how power is shifting in the international system, focusing on emerging powers like China and India. "Foreign Policy Analysis" studies the theories and practices involved in foreign policy, using case studies from countries such as the US, China, and Russia. "Ethics and International Relations" explores key ethical issues in international politics, discussing both traditional and modern moral frameworks. "The Far Right in Contemporary Europe" focuses on the rise of far-right political movements in Europe and their impact on mainstream politics. The "Making Humanities: Open Project" module encourages students to design their own research project, developing independent research skills. "British Politics since 1997" examines the evolution of the British political system, focusing on contemporary debates and issues.In the final year, students are expected to consolidate their learning and prepare for the workforce. The curriculum gives students the opportunity to choose from a variety of optional modules to total 120 credits, allowing them to specialize in areas of interest. There may also be the opportunity to work on a large final project, supported by a mentor, which integrates the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course.
