COURSE CURRICULUM

This course in History, Politics, and International Relations offers a broad and engaging academic journey, designed to develop your understanding of the forces shaping our world. In your first year, you will study a shared curriculum that introduces core themes and concepts across the three disciplines. Modules such as Ideas and Concepts that Shape the World and Freedom, Rights and Democracy help you transition into degree-level study while exploring foundational political theories and historical shifts. Other modules like Nations and Nationalism, The Making of the Globalised World, and After Destruction: The World since 1945 provide insights into how global political systems and national identities have evolved through key events and processes. The year also introduces the structure of political power and the practical workings of modern states in Power, People and the State. In your second year, the course takes a deeper dive into specialised areas, including the rise of the Far Right in Europe, the development of British espionage, and the influence of race, class, and gender in shaping modern America. Modules such as Emerging Powers and Global Order and The Shadow Warriors offer contemporary and historical perspectives on political power and statecraft. You will also complete a student-led research project through Making Humanities: Open Project, helping to develop independent academic and professional skills. Further studies such as Humanity and the Natural World and The International History of Europe broaden your understanding of the environment and Europe’s geopolitical landscape. In your final year, you’ll consolidate everything you’ve learned, with the freedom to choose from a range of optional modules that align with your interests. The year culminates in a major independent project—this could be a dissertation, a documentary film, or a curated exhibition. This final project allows you to apply your research and critical thinking skills in a creative and meaningful way, preparing you for graduate-level employment or further study.
