COURSE CURRICULUM

The Health and Social Care degree course is structured into three stages, starting with Year 1, where students receive a theoretical foundation in health and social care. The first year focuses on safe and effective practice, safeguarding, and understanding the sociological perspectives of health. Students learn about health delivery, the wider determinants of health, and explore historical and modern societal challenges. Modules cover contemporary health issues, the development of the health and social care system, working in health and social care settings, and the impact of the environment on health. Upon successful completion, students earn a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Health and Social Care.Year 2 builds on the knowledge gained in Year 1 and delves deeper into the physical and psychological development across the lifespan, with a particular focus on vulnerable and marginalised groups. This year introduces mental health and social policy and provides an understanding of the challenges faced by health and social care systems. Students also explore research methods, which are essential for the final year project. Upon completion, students earn a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Health and Social Care.In the final year, students engage critically with global health issues, healthcare policy, and leadership in health and social care. They examine communicable and non-communicable diseases, their spread, prevention, and management. Students are also required to complete a research project, which may be shared at a research conference. Modules in this stage cover global health, leadership, management in health and social care, and tackling disease. The degree culminates in the research project, allowing students to explore a specific area of interest and demonstrate their research and enquiry skills. Successful completion of the final year awards students a full degree in Health and Social Care.
