The Games Design and Development course offers a comprehensive journey through the creative and technical processes involved in game creation. In the first year, students build foundational skills across creative technologies, exploring both 2D and 3D design, storytelling, and rapid prototyping. Through modules like Skills Lab, Narrative and Storytelling, and Hack Lab and Creative Play, students gain hands-on experience using analogue and digital tools, working collaboratively across disciplines. Key areas such as concept development, production pipelines, and visual design are covered, giving students the necessary grounding to understand the iterative nature of game design.The second year deepens this knowledge by focusing on key components of game development such as gameplay mechanics, world-building, and player experience. Modules like Concept Development in Games Design and Designing Game Worlds help students understand the structure and emotional depth required to create immersive digital environments. Prototype Development allows students to test ideas using real-time feedback in game engines, while Understanding Player Experience examines how narrative and design impact user engagement. The year also emphasizes industry readiness with Professional Practice in the Games Industry, offering real-world project experience or placements to prepare students for professional environments.In the final year, students consolidate their learning through independent and collaborative projects. Research Investigation lays the groundwork for their Final Major Project by developing design documentation and conducting thematic research. Advanced Game Design and Development and the Indie Game Project push students to create polished, playable prototypes using industry-standard techniques. The course culminates in a large-scale studio project where students work in teams, simulating industry-level game development. Through this practical experience, supported by collaborative and professional modules, students emerge with a strong portfolio, advanced technical skills, and a clear understanding of industry expectations, ready to pursue careers in games and interactive media.
