The BA (Hons) Film Production course offers a comprehensive and practical approach to learning the art and craft of filmmaking, guiding students from foundational skills in year one through to professional-level work in the final year. In the first year, students are introduced to the essential tools and concepts of film and media production, including technical aspects like camera operation, lighting, sound, and editing, alongside the study of key theoretical frameworks such as representation, narrative, and genre. Modules like Storytelling: From Page to Production and Making Media that Matters encourage students to explore their creativity while developing scripts and factual content rooted in real-world issues. The second year builds on these skills with a strong focus on collaborative production and professional practice. Students engage in short film projects, refine their on-set technical abilities, and delve into global film history. Modules such as Working with Actors and Directors and Developing Your Career in Production allow for deeper specialisation and practical industry engagement through placements and collaborative work. The final year is designed to consolidate all prior learning and prepare students for the transition into the professional world. Through modules like Experimenting in Film and Media and Developing Film Concepts, students explore innovative practices and begin shaping their own unique voice. The capstone project, Final Film Production, challenges them to independently produce a significant piece of work that showcases their abilities. Alongside this, students prepare professional portfolios and explore career pathways with the guidance of tutors and mentors. With the option to specialise in cinematography, scriptwriting or post-production, the course ensures graduates leave with a well-rounded, industry-relevant education and a clear direction for their future in the film and media industries.
