COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year, students are introduced to the core areas of language, literature, and writing, providing a strong foundation for their academic journey. The curriculum covers a broad range of subjects including "Language, Literature and Writing Through Time," which explores the evolution of spoken and written language from ancient to contemporary times. The module "Sounds, Words, Structure, Meaning: How English Works" delves into the phonetics, morphology, and syntax of English, providing a thorough understanding of language acquisition and structure. Additionally, modules such as "Investigating Film" and "Writing for Online, Social, and Print Media" introduce students to essential media skills, from film history to modern journalistic writing across multiple platforms. "Literary Locations: Representing Space and Place" offers a theoretical exploration of place and spatiality in literature, while the "Group Project for Local Impact" allows students to engage in community-based work, applying their skills to promote positive change. In the second year, students build on the knowledge gained in the first year by developing more specialized skills in areas like poetry, songwriting, and short story writing. Modules such as "Poetry, Songwriting and Performance" and "Short Story Workshop" allow students to hone their creative writing skills. "Language and Society" focuses on the social functions of language, including regional dialects, identity, and cultural ideologies, while "Stylistics" applies linguistic models to analyze various texts. "Modernisms and Postmodernisms" explores 20th-century literature, introducing students to key literary movements. The "Age of Revolutions" module examines literature from the long 18th century, exploring themes of Enlightenment ideals and the rise of capitalism. In the final year, students consolidate their learning and prepare for their careers. The compulsory module "Interactive and Video Game Narratives" examines storytelling within video games, analyzing how gameplay influences narrative experiences. Students also have the opportunity to select optional modules to tailor their studies to their interests. They may undertake a major final project, supported by a mentor, to further develop their expertise in a specific area of interest.
