COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of this degree, students are introduced to foundational concepts and issues related to the development, education, and wellbeing of children and young people. Modules such as Childhood and Youth in Context and Theories of Education provide a framework for understanding the social, political, and economic influences on childhood and youth, while encouraging exploration of national and international service provision. Students examine the impact of safeguarding practices, curricula, and educational approaches across diverse learning settings. Modules like Personal and Academic Development and Skills for Working with Children and Young People support the development of reflective and practical skills essential for engaging ethically and effectively in educational environments. By the end of the year, students gain a strong foundation in the principles that underpin education and support services for young people. In the second year, the course expands on these core ideas by incorporating multidisciplinary perspectives from psychology and sociology to better understand child and youth development within educational contexts. The Introduction to Professional Experience module allows students to apply their academic learning in real-world settings such as schools, youth centers, or healthcare environments. Students also explore research methods and learn to design ethical, methodologically sound studies, preparing them for more advanced academic and professional tasks. Other modules such as Multi-Disciplinary Practice, Psychology of Childhood and Education, and Health and Wellbeing Education help deepen understanding of collaborative practices and interventions that promote holistic wellbeing. This year lays the groundwork for students to develop adaptive, reflective, and globally conscious professional identities. In the final year, students further refine their practical and academic capabilities through a second placement and a dissertation project tailored to their interests. Modules such as Innovation, Creativity and Change, and International and Comparative Perspectives challenge students to engage with global issues, address inequality, and reflect on inclusive practices. Special and Inclusive Education enables a deeper understanding of how education systems can support learners with additional needs. The year culminates with a dissertation, offering the opportunity to research and propose solutions to a specific challenge related to education, childhood, or youth, equipping students with the critical thinking, research, and communication skills needed for employment or further study in this field.
