COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Conservation Practice is a two-year program designed to equip graduates from humanities and science backgrounds with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience required for a career in conservation. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in conservation theory and practice through core modules covering essentials of conservation, evidence-based preservation of organic materials, managing metallic and inorganic cultural heritage, museum collections management, and an introduction to practical conservation techniques. This year also includes an eight-week summer placement, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world conservation settings and gain valuable professional experience. In the second year, students engage in a combination of taught modules and practical projects, further developing their technical and analytical abilities. Core modules include advanced practical projects, making conservation decisions, skills and methods for postgraduate study, and a dissertation, which allows students to undertake original research and contribute to the field of conservation. Optional modules such as the archaeology of death and commemoration, analysis in heritage science, and collection care in the museum environment provide opportunities for students to tailor their studies to specific areas of interest. Across both years, the program emphasizes hands-on experience, critical thinking, and professional readiness, preparing graduates to operate confidently in cultural heritage preservation and related sectors.
