COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Sustainable Building Conservation equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required for the preservation and sustainable management of historic buildings. In the first year, students engage with core modules designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in the field. The Conservator’s Role introduces students to professional responsibilities and ethical considerations in conservation practice, while Tools of Interpretation develops skills for analysing, documenting, and understanding historic structures. Energy Use in Historic Buildings examines the challenges of balancing energy efficiency with heritage preservation, highlighting sustainable strategies for retrofit and adaptation. Case Studies and Regional Work offers hands-on experience, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world conservation projects, often within specific local contexts. Design Tools: Methods of Repair provides practical guidance on materials, techniques, and decision-making processes for repairing and maintaining historic structures. The program culminates in a dissertation, allowing students to undertake an in-depth, independent research project that integrates theory, practice, and sustainability considerations. Throughout the year, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and professional judgment skills, preparing them to respond effectively to complex conservation challenges. This combination of theoretical study, practical application, and research prepares graduates for careers in heritage management, conservation practice, and related professional roles, while supporting pathways to professional accreditation.
