COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Social Science Research Methods is structured around six 20-credit taught modules and a 60-credit supervised dissertation, designed to develop advanced research skills across the social sciences. The program offers two routes: the business route, aimed at students considering a PhD in Cardiff Business School, and the main route, which is suitable for those without a business focus. In both routes, students complete core modules introducing quantitative and qualitative research methods alongside shared foundations of social science research during the autumn semester. In the spring semester, students select additional modules to tailor their learning to specific interests, with options including advanced qualitative and quantitative methods, ethnography, creative methodologies, social policy, transport, environment, and crime research. Each taught module requires approximately 200 hours of work, combining lectures, group discussions, problem-based learning, preparatory reading, and assessments, spread over a 10-week semester. The program culminates in a 60-credit dissertation, offering students the opportunity to conduct independent empirical research in an area of personal or professional interest. Preparation begins during the spring semester, with the majority of research conducted over the summer. This dissertation allows students to demonstrate mastery of research methods, critical thinking, and analytical skills developed throughout the taught modules, equipping them for careers in research, policy, or further academic study.
