COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MSc in Medicinal Chemistry provides a comprehensive foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of drug discovery and development. Core modules are designed to equip students with essential skills, starting with Key Skills for Postgraduate Chemists (CHT232, 10 credits), which develops advanced laboratory and research capabilities. Techniques in Drug Discovery (CHT352, 10 credits) and Drug Targets (CHT353, 10 credits) introduce students to methods for identifying and evaluating potential therapeutic targets. Drug Development from Laboratory to Clinic (CHT354, 10 credits) and Trends in Drug Discovery (CHT355, 10 credits) provide insight into the process of translating scientific discoveries into practical medical applications. Practical Medicinal Chemistry (CHT356, 10 credits) and Drug Discovery Chemistry (CHT359, 20 credits) give hands-on experience in synthesising and analysing compounds, while the Colloquium for Medicinal Chemistry (CHT725, 20 credits) encourages engagement with current research and professional dialogue. The Research Project (CHT008, 60 credits) forms a major component, allowing students to apply their skills in an independent, laboratory-based investigation, often within a medicinal chemistry team. Optional modules enable students to specialise further in areas such as organic chemistry, chemical biology, biocatalysis, metals in medicine, and biosynthesis. Collectively, the program develops advanced technical expertise, critical thinking, and research skills, preparing graduates for careers in drug discovery, pharmaceutical research, and related scientific fields.
