COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MSc in Mathematics provides a comprehensive framework for advanced study and research in both pure and applied mathematics. The core module, Dissertation (MAT098, 60 credits), forms the central focus of the program, allowing students to undertake independent research, develop original mathematical ideas, and apply advanced techniques to complex problems. A wide range of optional modules enables students to tailor their studies to specific interests and career ambitions. These include Healthcare Modelling, Financial Mathematics and Modern Actuarial Risk Theory, Mathematical Biology, and Lie Algebras, offering pathways into applied, theoretical, and interdisciplinary areas of mathematics. Further options such as Spectral Theory and Applications, Calculus of Variations, Advanced Topics in Analysis, Stochastic Search and Optimisation, and Time Series allow students to deepen their understanding of specialised mathematical concepts and techniques. Additional modules in Statistical Programming with R and Shiny, Mathematical Methods for Data Mining, and reading-focused modules provide opportunities to develop computational, analytical, and research skills.
