COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MSc in Maritime Policy and Shipping Management provides a comprehensive foundation in the economic, policy, and operational aspects of the maritime industry. Core modules include Maritime Economics (BST801, 15 credits), which examines the financial and economic principles underlying shipping and port operations, and Maritime Policy (BST802, 15 credits), which explores regulatory frameworks, ocean governance, and international maritime law. Research Skills and Methods (BST847, 15 credits) equips students with the tools needed for rigorous academic and professional research, preparing them to analyse complex maritime challenges effectively. The Maritime Policy and Shipping Management Dissertation (BST850, 60 credits) forms the major component of the program, allowing students to undertake independent research on a specialised topic, applying theoretical and methodological knowledge to produce a substantial and critical piece of work. A wide range of optional modules, each worth 15 credits, enables students to tailor their studies to specific interests and career goals. Options include Business Data Analytics, Information Systems and Organisations, International Logistics, Multimodal Transport Operations, Risk Management in Supply Chains, Ship Chartering, Shipping Management and Finance, and Port Management. Collectively, these modules provide students with advanced analytical, research, and practical skills, preparing them for international careers in maritime policy, shipping management, port operations, logistics, and related sectors, and enabling them to navigate the legal, economic, and operational complexities of the global maritime industry.
