COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules in the first year of the MSc in International Planning and Urban Design provide a comprehensive grounding in planning, urban design theory, practical design skills and research methodologies. Site Planning, Design and Development (CPT805, 20 credits) introduces the principles and processes involved in designing and delivering development projects, including spatial layout, land use and site evaluation. Planning City Futures (CPT866, 20 credits) examines forward-thinking planning strategies and innovative approaches to shaping resilient, sustainable and inclusive urban environments. Designing Cities (CPT867, 20 credits) focuses on urban design practice, teaching students how to analyse, conceptualise and visually communicate design proposals for contemporary city spaces. Urban Theory Provocations (CPT925, 20 credits) explores critical theoretical perspectives that challenge conventional planning ideas, encouraging students to investigate the social, political, and cultural forces that shape cities. Research Methods (CPT926, 20 credits) equips students with qualitative and quantitative tools for conducting rigorous academic and professional research. The Dissertation (CPT508, 60 credits) provides the opportunity to undertake independent research on a specialist topic, developing advanced analytical and writing skills. Optional modules, Environmental Policy and Climate Change (CPT855, 20 credits) and Digital Planning and Development (CPT931, 20 credits), allow students to deepen their understanding of sustainability and emerging digital technologies in planning practice. Collectively, these modules prepare students for impactful careers in planning and urban design.
