COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules in the first year of the MSc in International Planning and Development provide a strong foundation in global planning theory, city development, and professional research skills. Development and Urbanisation Processes (CPT781, 20 credits) examines patterns of urban growth, global development trends, and the challenges faced by rapidly expanding cities. Planning City Futures (CPT866, 20 credits) explores future-oriented planning strategies, innovative urban models, and the role of planning in shaping sustainable, resilient and inclusive cities. Space and Place: International Planning Practice (CPT870, 20 credits) focuses on how planning operates across different cultural, political and economic contexts, analysing international examples of city-making and spatial development. Research Methods (CPT926, 20 credits) equips students with qualitative and quantitative skills needed for academic inquiry and professional evidence-based planning. The Dissertation (CPT508, 60 credits) allows students to investigate a specialist topic in planning or development, conducting independent research and contributing original insight to the field. Optional modules, each worth 20 credits, provide further opportunities to specialise in areas such as Site Planning and Design, Environmental Policy and Climate Change, Planning and Real Estate, Designing Cities, Planning for Sustainability, Sustainable Transport Policies, and Digital Planning and Development. These choices enable students to tailor the program to their interests and career aspirations within global planning practice.
