COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc International Criminology and Criminal Justice program is structured around a set of core modules that provide students with a comprehensive understanding of global crime issues and the varied responses to them. The core modules, each worth 20 credits, include "International and Transnational Crimes" (SIT311), which examines crimes that cross borders such as drug trafficking, terrorism, and human trafficking. "Crime and Social Harms" (SIT312) broadens the definition of crime to include forms of harm not always recognised by the law, such as environmental degradation and corporate malpractice. "Crime Data, Methods and Analysis" (SIT313) provides essential research skills, focusing on the collection, interpretation, and critique of criminological data. "International and Comparative Responses to Crime" (SIT314) explores how various legal and policy systems address crime, while "Crime in the Digital World" (SIT315) investigates emerging issues like hacking, cyberbullying, and online fraud. The 60-credit "Dissertation" (SIT004) allows students to conduct in-depth, independent research on a criminological topic of their choice, applying the methods and theories learned throughout the course.In addition to the core modules, students may select from a wide range of 20-credit optional modules to tailor their studies. "Professional Practice in Criminology and Criminal Justice" (SIT316) provides opportunities for hands-on experience and placements. Other options include "Cities and Mobilities in Digital Society" (SIT317) and "Global Political Economy of Capital and the Future of Work" (SIT319), which explore the intersection of social structures and crime. Modules like "Qualitative Interviewing" (SIT714), "Citizenship and Social Policy" (SIT908), "International and Comparative Social and Public Policy" (SIT912), and "Evaluation: Developing and Evaluating Interventions in Complex Social Systems" (SIT921) allow students to broaden their methodological and policy-related competencies. Together, these modules prepare graduates for impactful careers in criminology, policy, research, or international justice.
