COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Global Ecology and Conservation offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for impactful careers in ecological research and conservation practice. The core modules build essential competencies across a range of key areas. Field Skills for Ecology and Conservation introduces students to hands-on ecological methods and survey techniques in real-world environments. Assessing Biodiversity and Ecosystems develops the ability to evaluate the health and function of ecosystems using practical and analytical tools. Principles and Practice of Conservation Biology provides a theoretical foundation in conservation science and explores how these principles are applied to protect species and habitats. The Data Science module focuses on equipping students with the necessary statistical and programming skills to handle and analyze ecological data effectively. A major part of the course is the Research Project, which enables students to apply their knowledge and skills to a significant piece of independent research. This project often reflects current conservation issues and may involve collaboration with academic staff or external conservation partners.In addition to core learning, students can customize their studies with optional modules. Advanced Research Methods focuses on research design, critical thinking, and data interpretation. Field Research and Placement includes an extended field course and professional placement, providing direct experience with conservation work either in the UK or internationally. Integrated Water Sciences for the Real World explores the environmental challenges related to freshwater systems and their management. These optional modules offer opportunities to explore specific interests in greater depth or gain practical experience in applied settings. Together, the core and optional components of this program ensure graduates are well-prepared to pursue careers in conservation, research, consultancy, or policy, equipped with the scientific knowledge, practical skills, and adaptability required to address complex ecological challenges across the globe.
