COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Environment and Development program offers a comprehensive structure that combines core theoretical foundations with a wide range of optional modules, enabling students to tailor their academic experience to their specific interests within the field. The core modules, totaling 140 credits, provide students with a solid grounding in key areas. "Development and Urbanisation Processes" examines the patterns, causes, and impacts of urban growth and development. "Principles and Practices of Environmental Governance" explores frameworks and mechanisms for managing environmental issues at various governance levels. The "Environment and Development" module addresses the interconnections and tensions between socio-economic development and environmental sustainability. "Research Methods" equips students with the necessary analytical tools and techniques to undertake independent study, culminating in a 60-credit "Dissertation," where students conduct in-depth research on a topic of their choice, applying their theoretical knowledge in a practical and critical context.In addition to the core modules, students can select from a variety of 20-credit optional modules that allow them to deepen their expertise in specific areas of interest. These include "Environmental Management," which focuses on tools and strategies for managing environmental challenges; "Environmental Policy and Climate Change," which critically explores global and local climate policies; and "Planning City Futures," which investigates urban planning for sustainable and inclusive cities. Other options include "Urban and Regional Development in Practice," which provides insights into real-world planning and policy implementation; "Sustainable Food Systems," which analyses food production, distribution, and sustainability; and "Renewable Energy Development and Planning," which focuses on the planning, development, and integration of renewable energy within policy and development frameworks. This modular structure ensures that students gain both a broad understanding and specialised knowledge, preparing them for careers in policy, planning, environmental consultancy, or further academic research.
