COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Architecture (MArch) is a two-year program combining professional practice with advanced academic and design studies. Year one focuses on reflective learning during a professional placement, recognising the complementary roles of academia and practice in shaping an architect’s development. Students are expected to produce a full academic portfolio while developing practice-based skills and reflecting on professional ethics and responsibilities. The year includes three week-long short courses with tutorials, seminars, and supervisor guidance, providing structured opportunities for feedback and reflection. Between these courses, students engage in online tutorials, interim submissions, and practical exercises linked to their employment, integrating workplace insights with their emerging design identity. Core modules in year one include Design in Practice, Reflective Practice, and Research Methods, supporting the development of technical skills, critical reflection, and research capabilities. Year two is conducted full-time on campus in the dedicated studio environment and centres on two major components: a written dissertation and design research culminating in a Design Thesis. The thesis allows students to develop complex design proposals individually and collaboratively, addressing studio-specific challenges while considering contract law, procurement, and sustainable building economics. Additional modules in year two include Design Research, Professionalism, Project Delivery and Value, and Dissertation. Field trips and site visits complement studio work, providing experiential learning opportunities. Together, the two years integrate professional experience, research, and creative design development, preparing students for advanced architectural practice.
