COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MA in Music provides a combination of core and optional modules designed to develop both academic and practical expertise. The core modules include the Stage 2 Major Project (MUT300, 60 credits), which allows students to undertake an extended, independent project in their chosen area of music, fostering creative development and scholarly investigation. MA Research Skills (MUT001, 10 credits) equips students with the methodologies and techniques required for rigorous research, enabling them to engage critically with musical scholarship. Music Leadership and Public Engagement (MUT003, 20 credits) focuses on developing skills in communication, leadership, and community engagement, preparing students to contribute effectively to the wider musical and cultural sectors. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to individual interests and career ambitions. These include practical and performance-focused courses such as Closed Recital, Postgraduate Ensemble, and Studio Techniques, as well as pedagogical and theoretical options like The Theory and Practice of Teaching Music, Teaching Music: Developing Curricula and Directing Ensembles, Studying Musical Multimedia, and Music, Culture and Politics. Together, the combination of core and optional modules ensures that graduates acquire a strong foundation in research, performance, composition, leadership, and pedagogy, equipping them for diverse careers in music, education, and the creative industries.
