COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MA in Literature and the Environment provides a comprehensive foundation in environmental literary studies, combining core theoretical knowledge with practical research experience. Core modules include Introduction to Literature and the Environment (SET327, 20 credits), which familiarises students with key concepts, debates, and approaches within the field, and The Environment in Critical and Cultural Theory (SET328, 20 credits), which explores interdisciplinary perspectives on ecological thought and its cultural representation. The Live Project Brief (SET329, 20 credits) offers practical experience through collaborative research, enabling students to respond to real-world environmentally focused briefs set by local employers and develop skills in teamwork, research application, and presentation. The Literature and the Environment MA Dissertation (SET335, 60 credits) allows students to undertake independent research on a topic of their choice, consolidating theoretical knowledge, methodological skills, and critical analysis. Optional modules, each worth 20 credits, allow students to specialise in areas of particular interest, including American Literature and the Rise of Environmentalism, Planetary Fiction: World Literature and the Environment, Eco-Medieval: Premodern Literatures and Environments, Wandering, Retreat and Exile: The Romantic Imagination and Place, and Writing Welsh Environments. Collectively, these modules provide students with advanced analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for academic, cultural, or environmentally focused careers.
