COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MA in Language and Linguistics provides a solid foundation in linguistic theory, research methods, and independent study. Core modules include Research Methods in Language and Linguistics (SET044, 20 credits), which equips students with essential qualitative and quantitative techniques for analysing language data, and Research Foundations in Language and Linguistics (SET045, 20 credits), which introduces key theoretical frameworks, methodologies, and analytical approaches in the field. The Dissertation (SET015, 60 credits) forms the major component of the year, allowing students to undertake independent research on a specialised topic, applying methodological and theoretical knowledge to produce a substantial piece of scholarly work. A range of optional modules, each worth 20 credits, enables students to tailor their learning to specific interests and career aspirations. Options include Discourse and Social Interaction, which examines the use of language in social contexts; Current Issues in Sociolinguistics, exploring language variation and societal influences; Language Learning: Theory and Practice, focusing on acquisition and pedagogy; Research Experience in Language and Linguistics, offering practical research engagement; Phonetics and Phonology, studying the sound systems of language; and Corpus Linguistics, developing skills in analysing large datasets of language use. Collectively, these modules provide students with advanced research, analytical, and critical skills necessary for careers in academia, professional communication, language education, and other linguistically focused fields.
