COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules for the first year of the MA in International Relations provide a strong foundation in theory, global issues, research skills, and independent study. Issues in International Relations (PLT255, 20 credits) introduces students to key debates, concepts, and challenges in the field, covering topics such as state behaviour, global governance, and international cooperation. Research Methods in IR: Approaches to Knowledge (PLT257, 20 credits) equips students with essential methodological tools, including qualitative and quantitative approaches, critical analysis, and techniques for conducting robust academic research. War, Peace, Crisis and Globalisation (PLT271, 20 credits) explores the causes, consequences, and management of conflict in a globalised world, examining how crises impact states, societies, and international institutions. The Dissertation (PLT080, 60 credits) allows students to conduct independent research on a chosen topic, applying theoretical knowledge and methodological skills to produce an in-depth study. A wide range of optional modules, each worth 20 credits, enables students to tailor their learning to specific interests. Options include European Law and Governance, Conflict and Peace in Northern Ireland, Political Theories for Contemporary Times, Global Environmental Politics, Intelligence and Accountability, Multilateralism and International Law, and Decolonising the Present. Together, these modules prepare students for careers in international organisations, government, diplomacy, research, and policy analysis.
