COURSE CURRICULUM
The MA International Journalism program is structured around core and optional modules that integrate practical skill development with academic depth. In the first year, students engage with six core modules that provide a comprehensive foundation in global journalistic practice. *Information Gathering and Analysis 1* and *2* (each 20 credits) develop students’ abilities to identify, collect, and interpret newsworthy material from diverse sources. *International News Production 1* and *2* (20 credits each) focus on producing journalistic content suitable for international audiences, combining practical training with an understanding of newsroom standards across cultures. The *Foreign News Reporting* module (20 credits) deepens the knowledge of how international stories are covered, encouraging critical engagement with issues like bias, safety, and ethical responsibilities. The program culminates in a substantial *Dissertation Project* (60 credits), where students undertake original research or produce a professional project that reflects both their academic insight and practical journalism training. To enhance their learning, students can choose from a range of optional modules, each worth 20 credits. These include *In the Editor's Chair*, which simulates newsroom leadership roles; *Citizen Media: Digital Storytelling*, which explores participatory and grassroots journalism; *Communicating Causes*, focusing on advocacy journalism and public interest stories; and *Short Form Video Production*, where students learn how to craft compelling visual stories for digital platforms. These optional modules allow for further specialisation and skills development, offering a flexible and tailored educational experience. By completing a mix of theory and hands-on work, students are prepared for diverse roles in international media, including reporting, editing, production, and research. The course ultimately aims to develop professionals with the critical and practical competencies needed to navigate and influence today’s fast-changing global journalism landscape.
