COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology BSc program at Cardiff University provides a structured and progressive study of social life, equipping students with theoretical knowledge, research skills, and the ability to critically analyse contemporary social issues. In the first year, students take five core modules covering the fundamentals of sociology, social science research, and key sociological concepts, alongside an optional module of their choice. This foundation year helps students transition to university study and develop essential academic skills under the guidance of a personal tutor. In the second year, the focus shifts to contemporary inequalities, social theory, and research methods, with students also selecting optional modules across the social sciences, allowing them to tailor their studies to their interests. Opportunities for placements or studying abroad are available to enrich practical experience. The final year consolidates knowledge and enables students to specialise further, with a 40-credit dissertation project offering hands-on research experience under individual supervision. Students can choose from a wide range of optional modules addressing topics such as global justice, social policy, equality, environmental issues, education, and cultural analysis. Through this combination of theory, research, and applied study, graduates develop critical thinking, analytical abilities, and practical skills, preparing them for careers in research, policy, education, public service, and other fields requiring a deep understanding of society and social change.
