COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology and Education BSc at Cardiff University is a three-year interdisciplinary program that combines the study of social structures and educational systems. In the first year, students take six core modules covering key concepts in sociology, social science research, and education, providing a foundation for further study and equipping them with essential academic skills. A personal tutor supports students to make the transition to university learning. In the second year, students build on this foundation through core modules in social research methods, the sociology of education, and school policy assessment, alongside optional modules that allow them to explore topics such as childhood, inequality, ethnography, digital research methods, and social theory. This flexibility enables students to tailor their studies to their interests and career aspirations. In the final year, students consolidate their knowledge by taking modules from both the sociology and education portfolios and undertaking a 40-credit dissertation project, conducting independent research under academic supervision. Optional modules in year three cover a wide range of contemporary social issues, including global justice, social change, radical education, policy analysis, social inequalities, and environment and health. Graduates gain a deep understanding of social life and education, combined with research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in education, social research, policy, and related professional fields.
