COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Physics degree provides a progressive and comprehensive study of physics, beginning with a foundational first year designed to stimulate interest and establish core knowledge. Year one covers essential topics such as mechanics, electricity, magnetism, waves, and planetary science, alongside mathematical methods, experimental physics, and computational skills. Students can also choose an optional module in areas like astrophysics or medical physics to explore specific interests. In the second year, the course builds on this foundation with advanced modules in quantum mechanics, optics, thermal and statistical physics, condensed matter, and real-world problem solving, while offering optional modules such as biophysics or planetary studies. Practical and programming skills are further developed through laboratory work and scientific programming. The final year allows students to specialise in areas of interest and undertake a 30-credit research project, fostering independent research, data analysis, report writing, and presentation skills. Core modules include solid-state physics, atomic and nuclear physics, particle physics, and special relativity, while optional modules cover a wide range of advanced topics including computational physics, environmental physics, laser physics, cosmology, high-energy astrophysics, and medical applications. The program equips students with a thorough understanding of both theoretical and experimental physics, alongside highly valued analytical, problem-solving, and research skills, preparing graduates for careers in research, technology, and industry.
