COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Physical Geography degree provides a comprehensive understanding of Earth’s physical processes and landscapes, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills and fieldwork. In the first year, students gain a strong foundation in Earth sciences and geography, studying topics such as oceans, climate, global environments, and Earth processes, while developing essential skills in mapping, GIS, chart work, and basic data analysis. All students study the same modules in the first semester, allowing flexibility to switch between related degrees if desired. In the second year, the focus shifts to advanced concepts like process geomorphology and hydrology, along with fieldwork skills in sampling, data collection, and analysis. Students participate in a residential field course in a coastal national park in Wales and undertake five weeks of independent research in preparation for their dissertation. In the final year, students have greater choice in shaping their degree to suit career ambitions, including core modules such as the dissertation and Environmental Geomorphology, alongside optional modules covering topics like Global Climate Change. An overseas residential field course provides hands-on experience in environmental monitoring and landscape surveying. Across all years, the program emphasizes practical application, professional skill development, and engagement with contemporary environmental challenges, preparing graduates for careers in environmental science, hazard management, and related fields.
