COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Pharmacology BSc is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of how drugs interact with the human body at molecular, cellular, and systemic levels. In the first year, students complete five core modules alongside an introductory pharmacology module, developing foundational knowledge in biochemistry, physiology, genetics, and the principles of pharmacology, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, receptor theory, therapeutics, toxicology, and drug abuse. Year two expands this knowledge with six core modules covering key pharmacological areas such as neuropharmacology, immunology, endocrine and paracrine signaling, cardiovascular pharmacology, cancer chemotherapy, and practical research techniques. Students gain hands-on laboratory experience and may select optional modules in clinical anatomy or tropical disease pharmacology, supporting preparation for graduate entry medicine or global health contexts. In the final year, students engage in an intensive, research-led environment through six core modules, a 40-credit research project, and two optional modules. Core topics include pharmacogenetics, neuropharmacology, drug development, immunology, cancer, and cardiovascular medicine, alongside training in critical analysis and scientific communication. The research project emphasizes independent investigation, higher-level analytical skills, and practical laboratory competence. The program equips graduates with a strong foundation for careers in biomedical research, pharmaceutical development, clinical trials, and further postgraduate study, while also providing a pathway into the Cardiff Graduate Entry Medicine program for eligible students.
