COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics BSc program provides a thorough and flexible grounding in pure and applied mathematics, equipping students with strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative skills applicable across a wide range of careers. In the first year, students study foundational areas including elementary differential equations, geometry, linear algebra, probability theory, and computing for mathematics, with optional modules in classical mechanics, statistical inference, and financial mathematics. The common structure in year one allows for transfer between different mathematics degree schemes. In the second year, the curriculum advances with core modules in calculus of several variables, real analysis, and further linear algebra, while optional modules allow exploration of complex analysis, algebra, vector calculus, vibrations and waves, differential equations, probability and statistics, operational research, computational statistics, financial mathematics, and Python-based mathematical investigations. These modules build the essential foundation for specialised study in the final year. In year three, students have wide-ranging options with no compulsory modules, enabling them to tailor their degree according to interests and career goals. Modules cover advanced topics such as functional and Fourier analysis, algebraic topology, number theory, partial differential equations, measure theory, knot theory, methods of applied mathematics, fluid dynamics, optimisation, game theory, mathematics of artificial intelligence, and statistical modelling. Students can also undertake a project, either half or full year, developing independent research and transferable skills in communication, presentation, and time management.
