COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Geography BSc provides a structured progression across three years, beginning with an introductory first year that develops core academic skills and explores key themes such as cities, global rural change, environmental challenges, borders, identity and the geographical imagination. This foundational year consists of six 20-credit core modules, which together offer a broad introduction to contemporary human geography but do not count towards the final degree classification. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of geographical ideas and research methods through core modules, while also choosing from a wide selection of optional modules covering topics such as economic, political, cultural and social geographies, sustainable development, social inequalities, development in the Global South and heritage and regeneration. An optional subsidised field study trip also enhances experiential learning. In the final year, students undertake an independent research dissertation worth 40 credits, applying the skills and knowledge gained throughout the course to produce a substantial research project. A wide range of final-year optional modules allows students to specialise in areas such as climate change governance, mobilities, cities and social justice, gender and space, race and power and advanced economic geography. A part-subsidised international field trip may also be available.
