COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Geography and Planning BSc is structured across three years, beginning with an introductory first year that develops essential academic and analytical skills while exploring core concepts in geography and planning. Students study topics such as geographical thinking, globalisation, urban economies and key issues in planning, alongside optional modules that allow early specialisation in areas like diversity, cities, countryside studies and place design. The second year builds on these foundations by deepening understanding of research methods, geographical theory, and the economic, cultural and practical dimensions of planning. Students can choose from a wide range of optional modules covering themes such as planning law, sustainable development, community engagement, social inequality and development in the Global South, with the option to participate in a subsidised field study trip. In the final year, students apply their knowledge to real-world issues and complete an independent dissertation based on their own original research. A broad range of optional modules allows further specialisation in areas such as climate governance, sustainable transport, digital planning, infrastructure and social justice, with opportunities for overseas fieldwork. Throughout all years, the program emphasises practical skills, research experience and the application of geographical knowledge to influence policy and societal change.
