COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Human and Social Sciences degree progresses across three years, building knowledge in psychology and the wider social sciences. In Year 1, students take five core modules introducing key concepts in psychology, social science theory, and research skills, including areas such as psychological investigations, social science methods and becoming a social scientist. Students also choose one optional module in fields such as sociology, education, criminology or social policy, supporting exploration of their interests. Year 2 develops knowledge of human development, social psychology and research methods, while offering a wide range of optional modules across topics such as childhood, poverty, race, gender, digital research and social policy. Placement options in education, employment or real-world research provide applied experience, and students may choose to transfer to a four-year pathway to include a year abroad or professional work placement. In the final year, students complete a 40-credit independent dissertation supervised by academic staff, alongside core modules that deepen engagement with advanced themes. Additional optional modules allow further specialisation in areas such as prisons, radical education, social change, personality, equality, global justice, power and policy or neuropsychology. This structure strengthens analytical, research and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers or postgraduate study.
