COURSE CURRICULUM

In the Exploration Geology (BSc) degree, the first year provides a strong foundation in geological science, covering essential principles such as Earth’s internal structure, tectonic plate activity, mineral formation and the evolution of life over geological time. Students develop practical skills in mapping, surveying, microscopy and using GIS to interpret geological data. Learning is supported by field trips across South Wales and a residential trip to Pembrokeshire. All students follow a common first semester, allowing flexibility to transfer to related geography or geoscience degrees. In year two, studies progress to more advanced topics including sedimentary processes, igneous and metamorphic rocks, mineral deposits and hydrocarbon resources, alongside hands-on experience in surface and underground mapping, sampling and data analysis. Fieldwork includes visits to Wales, Cornwall, Dorset and a historic gold mine, and students can join the Exploration Alumni mentoring scheme for career guidance. A five-week independent mapping or industry project takes place between years two and three. In the final year, students tailor their learning through specialised modules and complete a major dissertation while using professional exploration software and real datasets. Optional overseas fieldwork consolidates technical and professional skills, preparing graduates for global careers in resource exploration.
