COURSE CURRICULUM

Across the three years of the Environmental Sustainability Science (BSc) degree, students build specialist knowledge and skills that align closely with global sustainability priorities. In year one, learners develop core analytical and mapping skills through modules in GIS and scientific data interpretation, while the Grand Challenge 1 module introduces the urgent global issue of securing clean water for people and ecosystems. Optional modules allow students to explore introductory Earth and environmental science themes, such as dynamic environments, Earth processes, living systems and fundamental geographical science. In year two, the focus deepens through core studies in Geographical Perspectives and Grand Challenge 2, which examines the causes and consequences of land degradation and prepares students to tackle real-world problems. A wide choice of optional modules expands scientific understanding in areas such as remote sensing, biogeochemistry, hydrology, coastal systems and the ocean-atmosphere relationship. Year three provides advanced study and greater independence, with modules in Global Climate Change and Grand Challenge 3: Climate Action, enabling students to investigate and propose solutions to climate-related issues. Optional modules include hazards and resilience, marine systems and extreme biogeochemical environments, providing opportunities to specialise and align with specific career goals.
