COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year, you will gain a strong foundation in Earth sciences through core modules covering dynamic environments, Earth’s structure and materials, geological time, and GIS mapping. You will develop practical skills such as field mapping, surveying, microscopy and data representation, supported by local field trips and a residential trip to Pembrokeshire. After semester one you can switch to other geoscience or geography degrees. In the second year, learning focuses on advanced concepts including geomorphology, hydrology, sedimentary processes, structural geology and applied environmental geology. Fieldwork extends to Wales and South West England, and a five-week independent summer project prepares you for your dissertation by focusing on real-world environmental problems. In the final year, you tailor your studies with optional specialist modules and fieldwork alongside core modules in advanced environmental geology, hazards, risk and resilience, and a major dissertation. Optional topics include petroleum and geoenergy, past climate systems and geodynamics, and there is an opportunity for an overseas field trip to integrate learning. Across all three years you will build strong analytical and professional skills, extensive field experience and research capability ready for careers in environmental and geoscience industries.
