COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Geography BSc provides a comprehensive understanding of Earth systems and human impacts on the environment. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in Earth sciences and geography through core modules covering oceans, climate, earth processes, and global environments, while developing essential skills in mapping, GIS, data analysis, and fieldwork. The first semester is shared with other Geoscience and Geography degrees, allowing students flexibility to continue or switch disciplines. In the second year, the program advances to more complex topics such as biogeochemistry, marine ecology, and the ocean-atmosphere system. Students gain practical experience in sampling, data collection, and analysis in preparation for their final-year dissertation. Residential field courses in Wales provide hands-on training in mapping, surveying, and environmental assessment, while summer independent research projects allow students to investigate real-world issues like soil and water quality or climate trends. In the final year, students have greater flexibility to tailor their studies to career ambitions and professional development. Core modules include a dissertation and the study of extreme environments from a biochemical perspective, complemented by optional modules in areas such as marine environmental systems, global climate change, advanced fieldwork, and hazards, risk, and resilience. Students also participate in overseas field courses to enhance practical skills and global environmental understanding.
