COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Education at Cardiff University offers a structured three-year program designed to develop knowledge, skills, and critical understanding of education within a broad social science context. In the first year, students take five core modules that introduce key ideas in education, social science research, and problem-solving in educational contexts, alongside an optional module to tailor their studies. Personal tutors provide guidance to support students in transitioning to higher education and developing essential academic skills. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through core modules focused on the sociology of education, school practices, and social research methods, while selecting optional modules across social sciences to explore their specific interests. Opportunities exist for professional placements or study abroad during an extended four-year pathway. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through 60 credits of education-focused modules and complete a 40-credit dissertation, enabling them to design, conduct, and report on an independent research project. The remaining credits can be chosen from a range of interdisciplinary modules across the School, allowing students to tailor their studies to future career goals. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on linking theory with practice, fostering critical reflection, and developing the skills necessary for careers in education, research, policy, and related fields.
