COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Criminology program at Cardiff University is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of crime, criminalisation, victimisation, and societal responses to disorder while developing strong research and analytical skills. In the first year, students take five core modules that introduce key ideas in criminology, social science research, and the foundations of contemporary criminology, alongside optional modules from across the social sciences. This year also provides personal tutor support to ease the transition into higher education. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge with core modules on offending and victimisation, responses to crime, and social research methods, while choosing three optional modules that align with their interests. Placement opportunities allow practical application of skills in real-world settings. The final year consolidates learning and offers greater independence through core criminology modules and optional modules tailored to students’ career aspirations. Students can also undertake a 40-credit dissertation, conducting a small-scale research project under academic supervision, or select additional optional modules covering topics such as crime, security, justice, policing, social policy, and equality. Throughout the degree, students develop the ability to critically analyse complex social issues, apply research methods, and communicate insights effectively, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, policy, social research, or further postgraduate study.
