COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Criminology and Social Policy degree combines the study of crime, justice, and societal responses with an understanding of social policy and welfare provision. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts in criminology, social policy, and social science research, alongside modules that develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and academic practice. Personal tutor support helps students transition into higher education while building essential skills for success. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through core modules on offending, victimisation, responses to crime, social research methods, poverty, and social policy analysis, with the opportunity to select an optional module from across the social sciences. There is also the option to transfer to a four-year program to include a professional work placement or a year abroad. The final year consolidates learning, with students taking modules from both the criminology and social policy portfolios, and completing a 40-credit dissertation that involves designing, conducting, and writing up an independent research project. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, including topics such as policing, prisons, drugs, crime in urban contexts, international policy, social justice, and emerging debates in contemporary society. Graduates emerge equipped with analytical, research, and policy evaluation skills, ready for careers in criminal justice, social policy, research, or further study.
