COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Conservation of Objects in Museums and Archaeology provides students with a progressive and practical education in conservation theory and practice over three years. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge and practical skills, learning techniques such as x-radiography, microscopy, photography, and instrumental analysis through core modules. Optional archaeology modules offer context and deepen understanding of cultural heritage. In the second year, the curriculum builds on this foundation with advanced theory, practical laboratory work, and museum vacation placements, allowing students to apply their skills in real-world settings. Core modules focus on the preservation of organics, management of metallic and inorganic heritage, and museum collections management, while optional modules expand knowledge of historical contexts and archaeological practices. In the third year, students consolidate their expertise, working on more complex practical projects and engaging with a research module where they design, deliver, and evaluate conservation-related studies. Core modules cover professional conservation skills and research in practice, while optional modules allow further exploration of archaeology, forensics, and spatial technologies. Across the degree, students gain extensive hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge, equipping them with the technical, analytical, and professional skills required to become effective conservators, capable of preserving cultural heritage in museums, archaeological sites, and related institutions.
