COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences BSc provides a thorough grounding in the life sciences, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. In the first year, students build a broad foundation across core disciplines including biological chemistry, cell biology, microbiology, genetics, evolution, anatomy and physiology, animal and plant biology, and ecology, while also developing essential scientific skills such as data handling, analysis, and laboratory techniques. The second year allows for greater specialisation, enabling students to focus on topics of interest while enhancing their understanding of experimental design, statistical analysis, scientific communication, and advanced laboratory methods. Optional modules in areas such as biochemistry, physiology, developmental and stem cell biology, molecular biology, ecology, and neuroscience allow students to tailor their studies to their career goals. In the third year, students engage in in-depth study, undertaking a final year research project that fosters independent learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, and immerses them in the research culture of the biosciences. Additional optional modules offer the opportunity to explore specialised fields such as synthetic biology, bioinformatics, infection biology, systems biology, conservation, genomics, and advanced cell biology, allowing students to develop expertise in emerging areas. This integrated approach prepares graduates for careers in biotechnology, healthcare, research, conservation, and other science-related fields, as well as for further postgraduate study.
